Happy Word Day!
More specifically: Happy Birthday, OED! February 1st, 1884 saw the first publication of the first piece of the first version of our beloved bibliocopia. From Wikipedia:
It was February 1, 1884, 23 years after Coleridge's sample pages, when the first portion, or fascicle, of the Dictionary was published. The full title had now become A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society, and the 352-page volume, covering words from A to Ant, was priced at 12s.6d.
As far as I know, there isn't yet a National Word Day. I hereby nominate today, February 1, to be (Inter)National Word Day every year! And who better to spread the meme than the blogosphere? Pass it on -- or, you know, write your congressperson. And in the meantime, celebrate by learning and using a new word. Or if you're feeling bold: neologize!
